I have lost count of the number of times people have asked me that question that most of us are hounded with… “What do you want to do with your life? What career do you want for yourself?”
I am lucky enough to have found my passion at the young age of 26 but sadly, some stories of happiness and inspiration come with heartbreak, tough lessons and realisations.
If you are here, reading My Story, you are here to get to know me a little better. Whether it is because you are keen on my services and products OR you’re just having a little stalk HA… either way, I welcome you! 😊
In My Story, I not only want to share my Skills & Experience, I would also like to hopefully spread some light in your life… even if it is in a very small way.
If you want to skip My Story and just get down to business, that’s fine! You can find out about my studies, skills and experiences here which will take you to the right spot. OR even easier, you can check out my CV here on my Linkedin Profile.
Before I get into My Story, I want to devote this part to pay respects to my partner Shane Ronan who we heartbreakingly lost in December 2017. Without Shane, I would not have the strength to be where I am today. He is the one reason why I am diving head first into following this passion. So thank you Shane, for being my best friend, my loving partner, my teacher and a down right solid legend. I could say that at the age of 25, your life was taken too soon, but I’d be wrong because you are home now. Someone shared with me a Quote that really hit close to my heart:
“Life is a dream walking. Death is going home.”
And I speak for everyone here who has lost someone close, that our loved ones are now home; dancing, singing, flying, resting, with God in the beautiful heavens; whatever you may believe in… they are home, surrounded in unconditional JOY. We all miss you so much Shane, and keep you close to our hearts every moment of every day. You are now my Guardian Angel <3
Where I am from and based
Yes… I will admit… with GREAT pride that I am a Cockroach at heart; born in NSW but grew up in the beautiful Tropics of North Queensland, in a small town called Tully. I was lucky and still am, to be surrounded by luscious rainforests, mountains, freshwater creeks nestled right by the ocean and islands of Mission Beach.
Besides moving and living at a few other locations, I studied and completed a Bachelor’s Degree, worked in the Events and Marketing industries, ran and sold a Cape York Touring Business called Cockatours alongside my partner Shane… a business that was driven by passion, love and devotion… and now, I am in the midst of launching my own Savvy Little Business to follow my dreams of becoming a Web and Graphic Designer. Good luck to me!
My studies & skills
I have a Bachelor of Business Degree majoring in Events Management and Communications Design (similar to graphic design), completed in 2014 with James Cook University. I started my studies at the age of 17 and without even knowing, I had set up a good combination of skills for myself. Business knowledge along with organisation, marketing skills and the ability to do Graphic Design is every business owners’ favourite flavoured cheese cake!
During my studies I did an internship for Mad Maggies Promotions in Townsville and was involved with a number of events including: Julia Creek Dirt N Dust Festival, The Best Butt Competition and the Not Too Old To Dance rock festival. And yes, if you are asking… I literally had to take photos of Butts (with jeans on!).
Once I graduated and hit the big smoke of employment, my first job was for an Event Company called Adventurethon, who organises off-road Triathlons at multiple locations in Australia. My position was an Event Assistant and involved an array of work including administration, registrations, marketing, graphic design, event planning etc. Here, was when I first touched the realms of Website Design by doing only small edits for Adventurethon’s Website.
Cockatours: 4WD Touring business built from ground up with Shane <3
OUR BIGGEST MILESTONE
I had to cut down a lot on this part of My Story or you would be getting yourself into a 200 page Love Novel. But this part of My Story is also very special to me and to a lot of Shane’s loved ones, so I will be writing a blog to share His Story from my view very soon. For now, here is only a glimpse of Our Biggest Milestone.
In 2015, at the age of 23, Shane and I began Cape York Tours with a 4WD 18-seater Truck named Zues. Cockatours was a business we built from ground up with no experience of how to be a tour guide, business owner, book keeper etc. Pretty much ALL the things you needed to be a Cape York Tour Operator, we didn’t have.
Shane was your typical electrician tradie (who actually loved wearing his tradie jocks, even when they were 10 years old and as thin as snake skin) and a full-time tripper that believed everything was possible if you have your heart in it. I was a little innocent Asian girl who was still trying to find her path but was swept away by Shane’s charm and passion for his business, so I decided to follow my heart with him on his journey of creating a lifestyle we all dream of; to explore, adventure, camp and meet new people.
So there we had it! Your tradie electrician and his little innocent Asian girlfriend taking you on a two-week camping adventure to the most Northern Tip of Australia in Cape York, with up to 14 passengers.
And where can I start… we experienced A LOT. Shane grew from an electrician tradie to a professional bush mechanic, need-for-speed truck driver, wildlife whisperer (and I’m talking like, he literally tried to whisper to ALL creatures, big & small), bush tucker guinea pig that taste tested anything that looked like a seed or fruit, Cape York historian, grey nomad, explorer, a huge inspiration to a lot of our passengers twice his age (no offence) etc etc etccccc… all with the attitude of “yeah, she’ll be right mate.”
I grew into a profesh bush tucker cook, graphic & web designer, marketer, gangster truck driver who wore sick-as boots, nerdy book keeper, organiser of the most unorganised partner I could have ever had etc etc etcccc… pretty much all the business stuff with the attitude of “Shane, think before you do!”
Together, we made it work and we had a balance. Despite the vehicle break-downs in the middle of no-where, multiple days without showers (mmm yum!), bush for toilets (shovel for flush), financial stress, criticisms, self-doubt, drained energy, snot/boogas that came out like red dirt, bogged truck, tenting in the rain, arguments/disagreements, cat back home getting lost and going on his own adventure… we loved every moment of it. We were LIVING.
Loss of my Soulmate
On December 04, 2017 Shane passed after an unexpected accident. From here, life changed dramatically. Not only for me, but for everyone who loved him.
Our future adventure together was now gone and life had taken a new path for me. My hope was to sell our business to someone I knew was in it with a big heart and with the HUGE help of Shane’s dad Andy <3, family & friends; Cockatours is now in great hands with a new owner who we actually went to school with. So Cockatours will live on!
If I could give you one message from My Story, it would be that same saying everyone repeats and I’m sure you see all over Facebook; “Follow your Heart”.
But I kid you not, this is one lesson I have learnt from my experience and that Shane used to preach non-stop. It’s not just to Follow your Heart career wise, but in everyday life; the activities you do, the people you see, the judgements you make (on others and yourself), the gifts you give (tangible & intangible), the Life you surround yourself with.
Now don’t get me wrong, I am not claiming to be a wise ol’ Guru HA! I am still learning myself. But if I have the opportunity to share a sparkling little message with you, I will grab it. And hopefully you will join me on a lifestyle change for yourself. That same “way of life” a wise, young, handsome man named Shane Ronan followed… which was to Follow your Heart.
And now, I am here… with my business called Savvy Little Freelancer. Following the foot steps of someone so special to me. Growing to become a Website and Graphic designer, because right now, that is what my heart wants 😊 <3
