I am a young and passionate website and graphic designer who has grown up in a small town called Tully, located in the beautiful Tropics of North Queensland. I am now chasing a path that I have always dreamed of; which is to create a business of my own, doing what I love.
Sadly, some stories of happiness and inspiration do come with heartbreak and this part of my life has gotten me to where I am today which I am grateful for. But I won’t go head first into the details… Let’s start from the beginning!
My Studies & skills
Besides my Bachelor of Business Degree majoring in Events Management and Communications Design (similar to graphic design) I have finally found my passion for that “one thing I want to do” that everyone is searching for. So here I am! Diving head first… going full swing into creating my own savvy little business specializing in website design. As of this moment, I am currently now studying Website Design and Development and doing freelance design work for clients.
Where it all began
I built my graphic design skills through my James Cook University course in Townsville although, website design was something that popped up for me after I completed my studies in 2013 and hit the big smoke of employment. My first job was working for an Event Company called Adventurethon, organising off road Triathlons at multiple locations in Australia. This was where I first experienced the realms of website design doing small edits for Adventurethon’s website here and there.
2015 was a new year and I set off to Brisbane in hope to find the job of my dreams. During this time, my soulmate Shane was still living back in Tully diving head first into his own dream of running day tours and camping tours out of his 4WD Bus. This idea seemed out of this world since he had no experience whatsoever and was an electrician by trade but he soldiered through and created a business called Cockatours.
At this stage, Shane and I were aged 22 and I admire his courage for leaping for a great passion of his. We spent 6 months in a long distance relationship both trying to find our path in life. While I worked in Administration I also helped Shane with his marketing plans; designing posters, flyers and built him my first ever website for Cockatours.
My biggest Milestone
In August 2015, Shane decided to hit Cape York with his business; one of the most iconic camping and 4WD destinations of Australia. We knew that this would set his business up if he did it right, but he couldn’t do it alone. We decided I would move back and we would both go full swing into creating a working lifestyle dream for us both.
So here we had it… two 23 year olds who loved the outdoors and camping, both had no experience of running 4WD tours whatsoever. An electrician who was the driver of an 18 seater 4WD Bus (plus a camping trailer) assisted by a Business Graduate who joined him only 2 weeks before to run a Cape York Touring business catering for up to 14 passengers for 14 days to the most Northern Tip of Australia! Crazy huh? And yeah, I look back now and think how in the hell did we do that? The secret – a powerful passionate couple chasing a dream.
We successfully ran Camping Adventures to Cape York and Locally (Tropical North Queensland region) with Cockatours, on our own from 2015 – 2017 completing three Cape York seasons. This part of my life was my biggest Milestone and I can assure you that it was probably Shane’s as well.
What did I learn? Well… where do I start? We learnt how to manage and grow a small business into a successful company, manage and budget financials, communicate and deal with customers, multi-task TO THE MAX, reach critical deadlines throughout the year, be a tour guide for a destination which was unknown to us, create relationships with other businesses, be creative and offer an exciting service compared to a bunch of well-known competitors, outback camping common sense, knowledge, safety AND not to forget the life long lessons that will stick with me forever!
At this stage, our life was set, we loved what we were doing and the business was growing. We were running our own business, learning about ourselves, camping, travelling AND I was also able to do website and graphic design (which worked out great as it cut A LOT of costs for us).
The loss of my soulmate
On December 04, 2017 Shane lost his life after a tragic accident. From here, my life change dramatically.
I decided to sell the business as it was a dream Shane I and would do and finish together. But Shane also strove for me to chase my dream of being a Website Designer and I hope someday I can make him proud.
